1)This Sunday:

14th Sunday after Pentecost

Jeremiah 2:4-13

Luke 14:1-14

“Doing it God’s Way”

Note: This Sunday, being the 5th Sunday of August, is a HELP Fund Sunday. All undesignated money placed in the Cheer Boxes will be put in our HELP fund, which is used to offer assistance to those in need in our church and community.

2) And a good time was had by all

A big thank-you to Gene and everybody else who helped organize the picnic at Penrose last Sunday. In spite of the newspaper’s fearful predictions, we ended up having great weather, which only added to the joy and cheeriness of the day. Lots of good food, lots of fellowship under the sun, rich worship and a chance to interact with neighbors from the community; to me, one of the best picnic we’ve had together. And we’re blessed to have faithful workers who cook, who organize, who set up and tear down, who make sure people feel welcome. So thanks to all who worked hard, and thanks to everybody who showed up and joined in.

3) Mission ‘In-Reach’ This Week

Join us as we reach out and serve those within our church who might need a window washed, a yard mowed, a house vacuumed. Whatever the need, we have set aside a few hours this week to serve as a ministry team. Thursday, 5-8 p.m., followed by dessert at Rebecca Roberts’ house; Friday, 4-7 p.m., followed by dinner at the James’ house; Saturday, 4-6 hours during the day, followed by dinner at the Fisher’s house. Sign up for the whole event, or only a day. If you have questions, or want to offer some time and energy, contact Rebecca Robert.

4) Men’s Breakfast on Thursday

This Thursday, 10:00 a.m., the Key Center Roadhouse (in Key Center, naturally). Somebody needs to call Dennis and remind him.

5) Town Meeting This Sunday

The Lakebay Board is hosting an all-church Town Meeting following the morning service this Sunday. We plan on speaking about plans for the fall, as well as discuss 2011 budget issues and the future ministries of our church. Our prayer is that all will come and together we can discern the Lord’s voice to us at this time.

Please note that, whereas at business meetings only members are allowed to have a voice in the proceedings, Town Meetings are for the whole body. Thus, all who are interested in the future of God’s ministry in Lakebay are encouraged to attend this important gathering.

6) Want to make some money for Lakebay?

By now you may have heard that the Key Peninsula Fair is taking place this Friday and Saturday, August 27 and 28, at Volunteer Park. This two-day festival is taking the place of the previous weekend-long KP Fair. The Fair is looking for volunteers for all sorts of activities, from running games to overseeing activities to taking tickets. Anybody who volunteers can do so on behalf of a community organization (like, say, our church). Following the fair, all proceeds will be divided up and distributed to those organizations, based on how many volunteer hours were given in their name. So you can be a volunteer at the fair this year, have an opportunity to mingle with our neighbors, and at the end of the day, some of the proceeds will be donated to Lakebay (if you sign up in Lakebay’s name, of course). For more information, check out their website: http://keyfair.org and click on “Volunteer.”

7) Camp No-Go

Camp No Go will be on September 5th while many are away at Family Camp.  This is a fun and casual worship service in the Fellowship Hall with a camp theme.  We'll provide the hot dogs and s'mores.  You can bring a side dish or salad to share.

8) New Bible Study this fall

Elaine Forch is planning a Ladies’ Bible study group for the fall. It will meet at the church on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. According to Elaine, “The group will be talking about aging gracefully using the Bible and David Roper’s Teach us to Number our Days as a guide.” Study books cost $13.95 each and will be ordered by September 1, so contact Elaine if you are interested.

9) Visit with Andy Larsen

We have arranged for Andy Larsen, former interim pastor at Lakebay and current leader of the Mosaics Project (an outreach to Muslims), to visit with us on Sunday morning, September 12. Andy will preach in the morning service, and then partner with us in offering a seminar/talk for the larger community that afternoon. Look for more information to come out shortly.

14) Quote of the Day

“Many modern models of family and church lean heavily toward creating an insulated protective bubble around both. Although it may not be their intent, they seem to be defining something that attempts to align with the practice of Old Testament culture instead of a New Testament mission. . .As leaders and parents, our primary calling is not to keep our children in the church, but to lead them to be the church. When we simply protect and preserve, we make the same mistake the one servant made in the parable of the talents. We cover our children with our fear and lack of faith. We hinder their potential to make the kind of difference in the kingdom they were designed to make.

Churches have the potential to turn a generation around by handing them the keys to ministry and saying, ‘Guess what? Not only do we need your help, but God designed you and God created you for this very reason. You were called to use your gifts just as much as the pastor was called to use his. Each one of us has a personal responsibility to be the church, and if you recognize that, it will revolutionize your life.’”
